But it is all good now!
I'm in the town of my alma mater for a doctors appointment and had some time to kill. Well, it has been icy so everything is covered and slippery.

Campus parking lots are empty and icy. Perfect for doing some winter tests on the Fiesta ST.

Band brake turns are great. Car control is easy with Tue electric steering once you feel where the wheels are. I had lots of fun and figured out how to control my car in the snow in a safe manner. I even had a pal in a green pickup do some choreography of his own.

But that was when the campus police showed up.

I mentioned that in addition to fun I was trying to learn some car control. Apparently he didn't want to do paperwork, cause he let me off with a warning. I'm glad, cause it would have been a wreckless charge.

All in all, I know what I did was technically illegal, but it was valuable to my experience behind the wheel. I like to think that Starsky thought the same.

In all, I hooned a big parking lot in a Fiesta. It was a good day.

It's a point of serious consideration with me to have a license plate with reference to "the rozzers" for any classic brit sports car I get.

I always get in a mood when cops come down on someone for doing something with no obvious direct or indirect harm...but I suppose its their right. Though given that its campus police...what are they going to do, hold your transcripts?

It's times like these that I wish I had RWD/AWD. Still, learning to handbrake well enough with the car, you could almost do a full circle.

Sincerely,

Fellow ST-er.

Yes, the handbrake in the ST is amazing. I got pretty good with it in the 5 minutes I had. Even managed to kludge out an almost controlled 360 :p

but...whats their authority? if i see campus police roll up to me I would probably just drive off, they have no jurisdiction outside the campus.

I'm not so bold. I parked, rolled down the windows and shut the car off.

Compliance goes a long way I think.

If you really want to learn some FWD oversteer control here what you do:

1) "Borrow" two (or a couple sets of two) plastic trays from the cafeteria or local fast food establishment.

2) Go to your favorite icy lot (preferably sans-police).

3) Stick the trays in front of your rear tires then slowly drive onto them.

4) Set the handbrake.

5). Hoon. Work on going in a circle first, then step up to side-to-side transitions once you feel comfortable.

Growing up in California, there wasn't a lot of snow/ice, but this could be done in the dry as well. You just wear through your trays rather quickly.

Tell me about it. Had a campus security officer reach into my Explorer and yank the keys out of the ignition, even though I didn't do anything in sight of him. Just got a bit sideways (only a bit, nothing serious) in the snow. So he took my driver license and student ID, told me he could have my car impounded, then went and sat in his Caravan, and just stared at my ID for a good 5 minutes. I think he was just following the lead of real cops, and just didn't know what they actually did once back in their car. He comes back and says he'll give me a warning. I wasn't even in the parking lot when I was sideways! It was on an access road, and I was hardly even sideways!

Don't fool yourself. Most university police have the same level of law enforcement authority as local police do. They are usually sworn peace officers, with all the same responsibilities (including the ability to arrest you).

Had you run, they would probably give chase and radio the locals as you are evading arrest.

You're in a parking lot and not endangering anyone but yourself. Seems silly.

Wreckless driving charge maybe? Idk. I never even grabbed 2nd gear.

He mentioned the possibility of me hitting a rut (lol) and flipping my hatchback (LOL) and then having to call him and he would have to do a lot of paperwork. I thought it silly too, but I went along with it.

Here were both my schools:

Notre Dame :

The University of Notre Dame Security Police Department, located in Hammes Mowbray Hall just east of the Power Plant, is fully authorized as a police agency by the State of Indiana. The department employs both sworn police officers and non-sworn campus safety officers who patrol campus and respond to emergencies. Additional staff members work as security monitors or in other support positions in the department. Notre Dame police officers complete state mandated training requirements established for law enforcement officers and have the same legal authority as any other police officer in Indiana. Notre Dame Security Police staff frequently work with city, county, state and federal law enforcement authorities. Agencies cooperate whenever possible on investigations and crime prevention programs to provide the best possible police services to our campus and local communities. Notre Dame Security Police staff offer an array of other services for the community. When you don’t know who to call, feel free to contact us for assistance.

Oklahoma :

Authorized by Oklahoma law, the University Police Department is an independent law enforcement agency whose officers are commissioned by the OU Board of Regents and certified by the Oklahoma Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training. OUPD functions separately from all other law enforcement agencies, although agreements have been made whereby assistance or mutual aid may be obtained in emergencies.

OUDP officers are available 24 hours a day, year-round. They are trained and certified as peace officers under Oklahoma state statutes, and many OU officers have received specialized training in areas of law enforcement and related fields.

OU police officers have jurisdiction on all university property and "territory adjacent thereto." They are authorized to conduct traffic enforcement on campus and on streets peripheral to campus, to conduct follow-up investigations and serve arrest warrants issued as a result of completed investigations at off-campus locations, and to exercise police authority or take action as appropriate for criminal offenses observed by them while on or off university property.

Yeah, but he can't give you a ticket because you might inconvenience him later.

That's like giving someone a warning that if they start the car, they might speed, and if they speed he'll have to fill out a ticket.

Also, FYI:

Utah :

Our police officers patrol the campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They provide any police related services needed on campus. Our officers are fully certified Utah state police officers. The police department is backed by a security staff of over 60 people. Our job is to protect the students, staff, faculty and visitors to campus as well as the University's physical assets. We do so by monitoring and responding to alarms, controlling access to university facilities, high-visibility patrol of work spaces and parking areas, and after dark escorts to those who request it. If you need help because your car won't start, or you've locked your keys in the car, we can help with that, too.
